Dear National Representatives
Thank you for those of you who have already sent in your forum's report or have let me know when you will send it in. As of today I have only received reports from the countries listed below. As you may recall our Strategic Plan indicated the importance of sharing information between the fora and the Head Office. It is important that each country submits its report in a timely manner to the Head Office so that we can include it in the newsletter and put it on our website.
If you have not already done so, can you please send to me the report by Monday, 12 May at the latest as the deadline has already passed and we will be going to print shortly.
If you are having a difficult time due to the English or time restraints, then please at least send me a list of activities that your forum has participated in this past year and you may also include upcoming activities(please indicate if they have not taken place yet, but will occur later this year). It can be very short but we want at least 3 lines from each forum.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you and best regards,
Barbara, Communications Officer

Dear National Representatives,
I am pleased to announce that ED will launch BREAST HEALTH DAY on 15 October 2008 in Milan. This will be an annual educational and informational event to ensure that all women and girls in Europe are informed concerning breast health concerns. We will develop a new edition of our breast health passport to release as a Guide to Breast Health along with our Short Guide to the Guidelines. In this way we will start a public health campaign to ensure that women understand the many lifestyle factors that concern breast health such as excercise, nutrition, and weight gain etc. We will hold a press conference on the afternoon of October 15th and the short film /media spot that is being prepared will be aired in all countries at about the same time. We will launch a website or a section of our website on this event. We would also want to list the local/national events each forum conducts in October and post photos of these events on this site. Other materials that can be used by the fora for local events will also be prepared.
We will do this in conjunction with the National Representative Day and General Assembly to be held on the morning of October 15. Therefore it wil be necessary for all National Delegates and National Rerpresentatives to come to Milan on the night of 14 October. ED will cover cost of airfare, and two nights in a hotel for this occasion.
Barbara Klein will send you more details on this soon. In the meantime I wanted to make sure you mark your calendars now and plan to come for our first BREAST HEALTH DAY event.
Best regards,
Susan Knox, Executive Director

Dear National Representatives
I am writing to remind you that we are collecting country reports for the 2008 Newsletter. So far I have only received one report from Ireland and the deadline for submitting the reports is 2 May. As you may recall our Strategic Plan indicated the importance of sharing information between the Fora and the Head Office. It is important that each country submits its report in a timely manner to the Head Office so that we can include it in the newsletter and put it on our website.
If you have not already done so, can you please send to me the report by Friday, 2 May? If you have a problem sending the report within the deadline, can you please send me an email so that I am aware of this.
Thank you and best regards,
Barbara

Dear National Representatives,
In view of a very negative press release and letter received from K. Joens yesterday, I am sending you the following statement on behalf of the Executive Board and myself.
You may feel free to send this to your media contacts, MEPs, or others who may be interested in our response to this decision. Please keep me informed of any press articles you receive or questions from parliamentarians so that we can respond in a unified and timely manner.
"Europa Donna-The European Breast Cancer Coalition received a letter and press release yesterday indicating that Karin Joens, MEP had made the decision"based on her initiative" to no longer continue cooperation between the parliamentary breast cancer group and Europa Donna. The Head Office of Europa Donna was informed by a letter that arrived by post yesterday. Susan Knox, Executive Director, said that she was unaware of any parliamentary meeting taking place to discuss this decision nor any other parliamentarians who had concurred with this decision. The EPGBC is not an offical body of the Parliament. In fact, said Ms Knox quoting an ED press release, it was set up in September 2001 together with Europa Donna as an informal "working group on breast cancer." chaired by Ms Joens. Europa Donna provided the secretariat for these 7 years, supporting the group with publications, posters for exhibitions, covering meeting expenses, doing research when necessary, and developing a website which describes the important EU resolutions and other EU level policies on breast cancer that have been developed over the years.
Over the last two years Europa Donna has been developing a Strategic Plan which was recently adopted by our Board and National Representatives; this addresses key areas such as increased transparency and funding diversification. Toward this end we have begun posting our financial statements and annual report on our website for the public. Our sponsorhip policy is clearly posted on our website as well and describes how we work with industry. All monies received from industry are in the form of unrestricted grants that are then used to cover the many education, information, and lobbying projects that ED undertakes for the year. No representative of industry has any influence, power, or input into how these projects are developed or how these monies are disbursed . As an NGO receiving grants from industry, foundations, and the EU, amounts received on an annual basis vary from year to year. In the prior year 2006, for instance, the percentage of industry grants to total income was about 29%. Looking at one year, is ,therefore, extremely misleading. It is positively absurd to accuse our board of being a "lobby instrument" or the pharmaceutical industry of abusing us.
As Europe's breast cancer advocacy organisation with groups in 41 countries, our efforts are aimed at ensuring that all the women in Europe have access to information and to the best screening, diagnosis and treatment for this disease. We are careful never to discuss specific treatments, and do not make treatment recommendations of any kind whatsoever.
As an advocacy organisation representing women regarding breast health, our obligation is to remain unbiased and impartial. Industry representatives with whom we work are aware of this and fully respect our position.
This press release represents the personal opinion of one individual. Europa Donna will continue to work with members of the European Parliament and National Parliaments to keep breast cancer on the health agenda and to see that the "EU Guidelines for quality assurance in breast cancer screening and diagnosis" get implemented across Europe.
This is our priority and we will not lose sight of that objective!"
Best regards,
Susan

Dear National Representatives,
I am attaching here our press release from EBCC-6 and the Europa Donna final statement and take home messages presented on the last day. In addition you can view
two of the presentations (mine on health economics and Christine Murphy-Whyte's on lifestyle and survival) on the ECCO Website. You need to select the day of the presentation and the type of presentation and follow the instructions to select the speech and speaker.
It was great to see so many ED advocates there and thank you all for your outstanding contributions to making this such a successful conference.
Best regards,
Susan

Dear National Representatives,
I am sending you the final list of National Delegates who are eligible to vote at the GA to be held in Berlin on Thursday the 17th of April. If your country is not on this list it means that you did not pay your dues in 2007 and have not yet paid your dues for 2008; you are therefore not eligible to vote as per our Constitution which states the following: “Only National Delegates of those Fora who have paid their annual fees shall have voting rights at the General Assembly…” If you have paid your dues for 2008 please contact us immediately as we need to receive confirmation of this from our bank by Friday the 11th of April. If someone other than the National Delegate listed intends to vote for your country we will need a signed proxy letter. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Best regards,
Barbara

Dear National Representatives,
We are now collecting country reports for our 2008 newsletter that will be published in July. These reports should outline your local advocacy activities during the last year and should be no more than 200 words in length. As we have 40 member countries we must limit the size of each report.
These reports should be written in English and will also be included in the Member Countries section on the EUROPA DONNA website.
As you know our Strategic Plan research indicated the importance of sharing information between the Fora and the Head Office. We have begun this process by sending out a program report describing our 2008 projects and by posting our Annual Report for 2007 on our website. In order for this communication to function better and for the Head Office to develop programs to support our Fora , it is important to receive a yearly update on the activities in each country. Therefore, we ask that each country submit a report in order for each Forum to be represented in this year's newsletter.
Please send us your report by 2 May so that we can include it in the newsletter.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thanks so much and best regards,
